Real Estate investing and tax strategies

You know how to deliver for your clients. But when it comes to keeping more of what you earn, the numbers may not add up the way you expected.
You're landing bigger contracts. Your team is growing. You're making real money. Then tax season arrives and you're left asking: where did it all go?
I've been there. After losing 80 percent of my income when a major client collapsed, I learned that high revenue does not equal financial freedom. Despite my background in accounting, nobody had ever taught me how to use the tax code as a wealth-building tool.
Now I teach expert-led service firm owners (agency founders, consultants, MSP owners, coaches) how to protect their profits and stop overpaying the IRS using strategies typically reserved for the top 2 percent of earners.
The Business Was Thriving. Until It Wasn't.
Like many founders, I thought I had a solid, sustainable business. Revenue was flowing and my reputation was strong. Then my largest client walked away, and I saw how fragile that success really was.
I had built my business like a W-2 job. One big income source. No safety net. And as a CPA, I felt like I should have known better.
That moment forced a full reset. Not just to rebuild, but to build smarter.
The IRS Should Not Be Your Silent Business Partner
Let's be honest. You work hard to bring in new business, and every time your revenue goes up, so does your tax bill.
The tax code isn't fair. But it is strategic. The top 2 percent aren't working harder than you. They're using a different rulebook, and that rulebook is available to you too.
I've had clients write off a new vehicle purchase simply because it was timed and structured correctly. That's money they never handed to the IRS.
Three Costly Mistakes Service Firm Owners Make
High-performing founders unknowingly sabotage their own wealth by missing a few key fundamentals. These are the three I see most.
1. Wrong Entity Structure
Your LLC is not a tax plan. Many firms start with a standard LLC without realizing it can be taxed four different ways, each with major financial implications. Getting your entity structured for tax advantage is one of the fastest ways to unlock savings and protection, and it varies by state, so one-size-fits-all advice won't cut it.
2. Improper Owner Compensation
If you're an S corporation and you're not paying yourself a salary, you're asking for an audit. If you're a partnership and treating yourself like a W-2 employee, that's another red flag. Compensation has to be structured intentionally. Done right, it minimizes self-employment taxes while keeping you compliant.
3. Treating Taxes as a Year-End Task
Most firms hand everything to a preparer in March or April and hope for the best. By then it's too late. The purchases are made and the decisions are done. At that point nobody can change anything, which is exactly why tax strategy has to be proactive, not reactive.
Real Estate, Automation, and Building Sustainable Wealth
After my own income collapse, I didn't just change how I ran my business. My husband and I started investing in real estate, because passive income is how you survive the slow months. It takes the pressure off your firm so you can stop operating in feast-or-famine mode.
I also push every client to automate the back office: bookkeeping, payroll, forecasting. Your job isn't to track receipts. It's to grow the business. Let the systems and the right experts do what they do best so you can stay in your lane and scale with clarity.
Can't I Just Ask AI?
Short answer: no.
I tested AI on a real scenario, and it missed $40,000 in tax savings. It also gave me incorrect line numbers on official forms. AI is fine for general information, but if you're not a tax expert, you don't know what you don't know. And if you're ever audited, "ChatGPT told me to" is not a defense the IRS will accept.
Don't Let the IRS Eat Your Margins
If you're scaling a service firm, you've already figured out how to make money. Now it's time to keep more of it.
This isn't about loopholes. It's about strategy, and it's likely no one has ever shown you how to play this part of the game. That distance between what your preparer files and what a strategist builds for you is the Craft Gap, and closing it is how revenue finally turns into wealth.
