The Credential That Couldn't Save Me
I was $100K in debt and I had a CPA license on the wall.
That's the part nobody talks about.
I knew how to file returns, how to stay compliant, how to keep clients out of trouble with the IRS. What I didn't know was how to build wealth, not for them, and not for myself. My training taught me to look backward at what already happened. Never forward at what was possible.
So there I was. A tax professional who couldn't fix her own financial situation. I remember sitting at my desk thinking: if I can't figure this out for myself, what am I really doing for my clients?
That question broke something open.
What CPA Training Actually Teaches You
Most tax education is backward-facing by design. You're trained to report what already happened, accurately, compliantly, on time. Nobody teaches you to look forward at what's possible with the same set of facts.
Here's the distinction in practice. A backward-looking tax professional asks: what happened this year, and how do I report it correctly? A forward-looking one asks: what could I structure differently next year so there's less to report? Same license, same tax code, completely different value delivered.
For me, that shift started in two places: how my business was structured, and when deductions actually got claimed. Entity structure isn't a filing detail, it's a decision that determines how much of what you earn is taxable in the first place. Most CPA training treats it as paperwork. I started treating it as strategy.
None of that is exotic. It's sitting in the tax code already. Nobody trained me to look for it. I had to go find it.
The Rebuild
Once I saw the gap, I couldn't unsee it. It changed three things.
How I Advised Clients
Compliance stopped being the finish line. It became the starting point, the floor, not the ceiling. Every engagement started asking a second question: not just is this correct, but is this the best structure available to you.
"Before working with Catrina, I was constantly playing catch-up, with no financial strategy or tax minimization plan in place. I was diving into projects without a clear plan, unsure if my efforts were paying off. Catrina helped me create a customized financial strategy, giving me the clarity and confidence to get ahead, plan for growth, and save more on taxes. It completely changed how I run my business."

How I Structured My Own Finances
I stopped applying the textbook to my own situation and started applying the same forward-looking standard I now hold clients to. The $100K didn't get fixed by working harder inside the old framework. It got fixed by changing the framework.
"Before working with Catrina, I was losing so much money on taxes because I wasn't set up correctly for my business. I had been taxed at a much higher rate for years and didn't realize it. Catrina helped me correct everything, especially understanding the unique financial needs of an independent artist. She completely transformed how my taxes and revenue streams were managed, and it made a huge difference."

How I Thought About Money Itself
Money stopped being something I reported on and became something I actively directed. Strategy became the work.
Where This Leaves You
If your business looks successful from the outside but feels tight on the inside, that's not a revenue problem. It's usually a strategy gap. The same one I lived in.
Most tax professionals can't tell you how to close it, because they've never had to close it themselves. I have.
If that's where you are right now, reach out. Let's talk about what's actually going on with your numbers.
